Is Europe following in the footsteps of ancient Rome?,

Someone was bound to ask.

Europe, Rome and Empire: Individualism, Social Solidarity and Decline, by Greg Melleuish

  1. Interesting read. Melleuish seems to omit a major aspect of the history of Europe that would be worth mentioning. He neglects Christianity. I don't think there was any institution comparable to the medieval Church in China, Rome, or ancient Greece.

Also, he misses the opportunity to explore the separation-of-powers concept within the context of a unified political entity. To be fair, he touches on this a few times but doesn't seem to view it as a fundamental part of a structure that would balance the rights of the individual with the necessary powers of the state.

    Thanks for posting this, Terrence.
