Great Treasury of Western Thought - Contents

Great Treasury Of Western Thought: A Compendium of Important Statements and Comments on Man and His Institutions by the Great Thinkers in Western History, edited by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren, was published in 1977.

Its topical listing of the contents is posted here. At each listed section are pertinent quotations from numerous authors. It's something like if Great Books of the Western World listed the pertinent excerpts from cited works under each Syntopicon topic, rather than references to the works. Instead of GBWW's dozens of volumes of the works cited, GTWT has 1,430 pages of quotations in very small type in double column. It's an example of a book for which a well-edited, reasonably priced e-book version would be an attractive alternative.

A scanned version was posted at the Internet Archive as a mirror of the posting at the Digital Library of India. My review of its pdf version indicates about 80 pages with text were missed in the scanning.

  1. I think for the time being, the print edition is the only useful one, when one looks at the (low) quality of the e-versions you link above. (Ideally this collection would have larger print, probably then requiring multiple volumes.)
