"The Great Books Program of East Carolina University’s English Department hosted Michael Hardt, a world renowned political scientist and philosopher Friday evening to give a lecture on 'The Power of Great Books: What a manifesto can do?' and discuss his interpretation of the Communist Manifesto.

"'Sometimes when the analogy to the past can illuminate contemporary possibilities. But there's sometimes also where one with an analogy of the past is too restrictive,' said Hardt. 'Thinking about the Great Books tradition in general, you've got to do both, both to be inspired by them and also by the analogies you can make with the present but also not be bound by them.'"
